History Nalanda University

The construction of this great university was started during (413 -455) AD or better known as the reign of Kumara Gupta., and later the construction were made during the period of Harshvardhana (606 -647) AD during the time of Hiuen Tsang. This university was a 6 storied building .This temple of education was destroyed in 1179 AD by Bhatkiyar Khilji.

During this period Nalanda passed into darkness. After excavations total 11 monasteries came out. The dimensions of each of them are (62.5 x 51.5). There were also a line of temples which are facing the monasteries in which 121 granite panels were put up.

Highlights, Attraction of Nalanda University

The constructed for the students of the university has a verandah. An observatory was also made for study of planets. There is large temple which is around 18 to 24m high and having the dimensions of (36.5 x 36.5). In the center there is Stupa built of baked bricks of dimensions (46 x 33 x 11.5). The 24m high clay statue of Buddha has been found from the recent excavations.
