After his graduation, Jamsetji Tata joined his father’s mill and worked there till the age of 29. After getting a kind of experience in his father’s mill he set up a trading company with a human capital of Rs. 21,000. After running it for some years he purchased an oil mill.

And then converted it into cotton mill at Chinchpokli and he named it as Alexandra mill. After 2 years he sold the Alexandra mill because he was getting a healthy profit. He replaced that mill by another cotton mill in 1874 at Nagpur. On 1st January 1877

When the queen Victoria was claimed the queen of India he organized a function for the naming of his empress mill, the period of the establishment of this mill was very important period for Jamsetji’s life. From that day till the day of his death in the year 1904 or we can say for approximately 30 years he made the foundations of the company what we better know today by the name of Tata group.

His main aims of his life were setting a steel company, setting up a world class learning institutions, and setting up a hydro- electric plant, which was fulfilled by his successors and their hard work. Finally the dream of Jamsetji came into reality with the establishment of “TISCO” (Tata Iron and Steel Company limited). It was Asia’s largest steel producing private company which produces more than 4 million tons of steel annually.

In the year 1945 Dr. Homi Baba asked J. R. D. Tata to give some support to establish the “Tata Institute of Fundamental Research”. After that the Tata group founded the “Private Electricity Generating Company” with a capacity of generating over 2300 MW.
