Over 4.72 lakh to take IIT JEE today

Today, more than 4.72 lakh candidates including 1.18 lakh girls will appear for the highly competitive Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) across the country on Sunday with aspirations to join the premier Indian Institutes of Technology. There are around 10,000-odd undergraduate engineering seats that are available in the 15 IITs in India.

Around 82,000 more candidates appearing for the examination this year than that of the previous year. Last year around 3.9 lakh students including 98,000 girls had written the examination.

In the IIT Madras zone, comprising the southern states and Puducherry, approximately 68,500 aspirants will write the examination. The highest number of 80,000-plus candidates will be appearing in the examination centres falling under the jurisdiction of the IIT Bombay zone.

The IITs will be rolling out the entire 27% quota for candidates belonging to the non-creamy layers among Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

IIT Madras is organising the JEE, which will be held across 1026 centres in the country and one in Dubai.

The admission process will see a minor change this year with the IITs deciding to complete the seat counselling and admission process for general category students online. Besides, a second round counselling will be conducted across IITs.
