History of Tagore hill

Tagore hill history goes back to 1908, when Jyotindranath, the elder brother of Rabindranath Tagore bought this hill in Ranchi from a landowner named Harihar Singh. He built a house there and named it Shanti Dham. This was the history of Tagore hill. Jyotindranath did the Bengali translation of Bal Gangadhar Tilak's Marathi Srimad Bhagwad Gita Rahasya.

However, the history of Tagore hill has not been this glorious for ever. After death of Jyotindranath in 1925, Shanti Dham fell into neglect and became a safe heaven for criminals. In 1963, Purnima Thakur, the daughter-in-law of Tagore descendent Surendranath, sold the property to Mandodari Devi, Chaudhary's wife, for Rs 20,000. However all this phases of neglect is now over as Tagore hill is fast emerging as the one of the most visited picnic places in Ranchi.
