It was a rare sight at least in Bihar, when over a dozen women auto rickshaw drivers hit the roads in Patna in Bihar. All these women auto drivers were very excited about their new job. Like women have shown that they can excel in any field or profession in life, they have now decided to show their mettle in auto driving. Almost all of these auto rickshaw drivers used to make their living by different means, but now they will do so by driving auto rickshaws on the streets of Patna. Two such new women auto drivers in Bihar are Sarita Pandey and Pinki Kumari, who were very excited and happy about their new job. They hope that driving auto will improve their living condition and they will be able to live a better life.
And all this has been made possible by the efforts of Bihar State Auto rickshaw Drivers’ Association (BSADA), which provided training to these new women auto drivers of Bihar. Training was provided to 35 women how to drive auto rickshaws, out of which 15 were selected to drive in the first phase. Though these drivers have learners’ licences now, but soon they will be issued permanent driving licences. BSADA not only trained these women drivers but also helped them get a loan from banks for their own vehicles. Banks provided a loan between Rs.1.5 lakh and Rs.2 lakh to each trainee to buy vehicles. The women had to put in only Rs.10,000-20,000 each from their side. They will replay the loan on EMI bais paying about Rs.3,000-4,000 each month.
Initially these women drivers have been assigned to work on pre-paid basis from Patna Junction, Gandhi Maidan and few other places. Bihar state government is also helpful in this regard. Earlier it has announced 100 percent tax exemption on any commercial vehicles purchased and registered in the name of women holding valid driving licences.
